Mega-Utilities Drive Invisible Technologies
نویسنده
چکیده
A decade ago, while managing the Computer Science Laboratory at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, Mark Weiser envisioned a computer “so imbedded, so fitting, so natural, that we use it without even thinking about it” (“Creating the Invisible Interface,” Proc. 7th Ann. ACM Symp. User Interface Software and Technology, ACM Press, 1994, p. 1). Today, Weiser’s vision is coming to pass everywhere: game phones, personal video recorders, digital cameras, sensor networks, automotive telematics, and more. Despite their apparent simplicity, invisible technologies represent the pinnacle of engineering accomplishments in digital design, networking, user interfaces, and machine learning as well as in the social science disciplines of psychology and anthropology. It takes a lot of science to move technology from the foreground to the background. This new bimonthly column will focus on leading-edge science that is inspiring the next generation of pervasive computing. Researchers at university and industry labs around the world will explain their work in intelligent user interfaces, interoperability, sensor networks, smart environments, and novel applications. In addition, the column will highlight the emerging area of proactive systems that come from the background to help people at the right time. MEGA-UTILITIES Computers are becoming pervasive in part because megahertz, megabits per second, and megabytes have become utilities much like water, gas, and electricity.

Reverse osmosis (RO) technology has been widely applied to water treatment such as seawater desalination, and large RO plants are many in operation around the world. Moreover, much larger plants will be required to secure sufcient water resource in the near future because global water shortage and quality problems are still getting more serious. Mega-ton Water System pr...
متن کاملDetection and Estimation of the Invisible Units Using Utility Data Based on Random Matrix Theory
Invisible units refer mainly to small-scale units that are not monitored, and thus are invisible to utilities and system operators, e.g., small-scale distributed units like unauthorized roof-top photovoltaics (PVs), and plug-and-play units like electric vehicles (EVs). Massive integration of invisible units into power systems could significantly affect the way in which the distribution grid is ...
متن کاملSystems Engineering in the Information Age : The Challenge of Mega - Systems
As it makes the transition from the industrial age to the information age, the Department of Defense, like other government agencies and indeed like the global business community as a whole, is moving aggressively to leverage and capitalize on advances in information technologies. The result is a clear trend away from stand-alone component systems to ones that are richly interconnected and incr...

Although the role of IT is salient in sporting mega-events (e.g. instant replay, goal-line technology), IS research has not yet paid any attention to the processes by which technologies are selected for and implemented at these mega-events, the strategies used by actors, nor the consequences of such implementations on actors in related sectors and industries. To tackle this underdeveloped resea...
